Having only lived in the US for seven years, I feel that I bring an outsider's perspective in viewing political, economic and social events in the US. With the looming immigration reform bill that is looking to grant amnesty to over 12 million illegal aliens, I couldn't stay silent any longer.
The rhetoric and shrill tone of the illegal immigration debate masks the blatant lies and underlying truths that are being covered up.
To me, the core issue has always been, is illegally entering the US a crime? If yes, then treat it like a crime. If no, then go directly to Go and collect $200. Answer: yes, illegally entering the US, just like illegally entering any country, is a crime.
Is the US the only country that is against illegal immigration? Answer: of course not. In Mexico, it's considered a felony to illegally enter the country. Ironic, isn't it?
Will securing the borders and reducing the flow of illegal immigrants lead to unfilled jobs that "Americans are unwilling to do"? Answer: No. This is one of the most absurb comments that pro-illegal immigration proponents make. As if a sudden dissapearance of Mexicans like the movie portrayed would lead to lawns growing out of control and no one to staff the local McDonald's. I lived in Canada for 25 years, and to my knowledge there is a low number of illegal immigrants in the workforce there. Yet you still have construction workers, gardeners, McDonald's staff. They're just...white.
For too long, Americans have been spoiled by the low cost labor of the illegals, and brought up to believe that certain jobs are beneath mainstream American. This in effect is creating a "slave" class of illegals where the perception is that only Mexican illegals can do certain jobs.
The reality is, without illegals, goods and services may cost more...but the job will get done as wages rise to meet demand.
Is illegal immigration a national security problem? Answer: of course it is! What sovereign country doesn't secure its border, especially in this Post 9/11 world? Why are we being subjected to 2 oz bottles of shampoo when potential terrorists can waltz in? In fact 3 of the captured terrorists who were planning an attack on the army base in New Jersey came in the country illegally.
Does being against illegal immigration make me a racist? Answer: no, but that's how liberals are portraying it. If you are against illegal immigration, you are nothing more than a spic-hater. It is their cheap and easy way to shut down the debate. After all, in this PC world, how better to silence critics by threatening the racist stick?
Is granting worker status to the existing 12 million illegals amnesty? Answer: yes, yes and yes. In this area, the Bush Administration and indeed most Republicans are failing to represent true conservatives. It is nothing more than rewarding criminal behavior, and cannot be called anything other than amnesty.
Are illegal immigrants a drain on society? Answer: if you think about it logically, you'll have your answer. Again, for the fear of being labelled a racist, illegals are not registered and thus are not obligated to pay income and state taxes, do not pay into social services. On the demand side, without medical coverage, illegals are a massive drain on our healthcare system by treating emergency rooms like their doctors offices, not to mention the use of all the other societal benefits such as schooling. So on the one hand, they aren't paying into the system like the 33% of my check that dissapears every month. On the other hand, they're heavy users of social services. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.
Will illegal immigration forever change the face of the US? Answer: it already has. With estimates of anywhere from 12 to 20 million illegals, there's a simple reason why Democrats want them legalized...guaranteed electoral victory that an additional 12-20 mil Hispanics would bring. And anyone that's seen the footage of protesters waving Mexican flags while marching in American cities cannot deny that something is happening.
If I were to enter Japan illegally on a boat, stay there, work then march around demanding that I become legalized immediately...what do you think the Japanese government would do?
So why should the debate be any different for the US?
Illegal immigration is unfair to those that are following legal channels to enter. It is a crime. It is a danger to our national security. It is a drain on our social services. It is creating a stigma of a new class of slavery.
It needs to be stopped.
We can only hope that the next Republican president has the will to take constructive steps towards ending this problem.
